Book this tour if you want to see mountain Azerbaijan up close instead of through a bus window — a mountain road, a river crossing on horseback, and a hike up to Anzir Waterfall, tucked away in one of the region's harder-to-reach gorges. It's an active alternative to standard city sightseeing, with a real physical component built in — nothing extreme, though. With a horse and an experienced guide, groups of different fitness levels manage it fine, first-timers included.
Jeep Tour to Anzir Waterfall via Khinalig
Tour Itinerary
The tour starts with a hotel pickup, no transfers needed, straight into the mountains. The drive takes around three and a half hours: flat plains first, then foothills, and eventually the real mountain terrain of the Greater Caucasus. The first stop is Khinalig, one of the country's highest-altitude villages, where locals still speak their own language and the architecture has barely changed over the centuries. At over 2,000 meters, the air is noticeably thinner and cleaner than down in Baku.
From Khinalig, the group follows a trail toward Anzir Waterfall, and at one point the trail is cut off by a mountain river — the only way across is on horseback. It's not a staged photo-op; there's simply no other way through. The horses are used to the crossing and know the route well, so even riders with no prior experience handle it without trouble.
After the crossing, the trail continues through terrain no tour bus could ever reach, gradually leading to the base of the waterfall, where the group gets a short break before the final climb.
The last stretch is a walk up through mountain scrub, with views opening up over the valley below. The air gets noticeably cooler as you get closer, and Anzir Waterfall — one of the most powerful in the region — comes fully into view just a few steps before you reach it.
There's no rush here — time to take photos, rest by the water, or just sit and take it in. After that, the group heads back down toward Khinalig.
The day wraps up with tea in the village itself, mountains all around — a quiet, low-key way to end an active day. From there, it's the drive back to Baku.

Note
The route requires a moderate level of fitness: off-road driving, crossing a river on horseback, and hiking up to the waterfall. Take water (at least 1.5 litres) and a light snack
A full meal is not provided, only tea in Khinalyg. The tour runs in any weather, but in case of heavy rain or fog, the guide will adjust the route for safety.
Not recommended for people with musculoskeletal issues, pregnant women, or children under 12 — please consult our manager. Photos and videos are allowed throughout the route. Please bring a power bank — there are no sockets in the mountains.
General Questions About Tours in Azerbaijan
You'll need a moderate level of fitness — not athletic, but not zero either. The program includes a hike up to the waterfall over uneven terrain with some elevation change, plus a river crossing on horseback. Nothing extreme, but a bit of stamina and sure footing go a long way. If you're generally active and enjoy being outdoors, you'll manage this without much trouble.
We recommend it for ages 12 and up. Younger children can join only with a parent and no medical restrictions. Older travelers or anyone with joint or back issues should check in with our manager beforehand to go over the route details.
